About Novartis Oncology Australia
With origins dating back to 1758 in Basel, Switzerland, Novartis Oncology Australia has grown to become one of the nation’s leading healthcare partners for the treatment of cancer, with many of its drugs holding leading positions in the treatment of breast cancer, chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), multiple myeloma, prostate cancer, carcinoid syndrome, and other cancers. With headquarters in Sydney, we employ more than 50 staff across Australia and New Zealand. Novartis Oncology Australia will spend approximately AU $3.6 million this year on local research and development across our business, helping to keep some of the nation’s leading researchers in Australia and New Zealand working on conditions that have the potential to relieve the burden of cancer.
Our Focus:
The strong portfolio of Novartis Oncology Australia provides a broad range of innovative therapies and practical solutions for cancer patients. Our efforts to discover and develop innovative approaches for the treatment of cancer have produced breakthrough medicines such as the leukemia therapy Glivec which has set a new standard in the treatment of Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and a specific type of life-threatening gastrointestinal cancer (GIST), and the breast cancer agent Femara, a first-line treatment for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor positive breast cancer, as well as Zometa for the treatment of bone cancers. Sandostatin is the leading treatment for patients with acromegaly and to control symptoms, such as severe diarrhoea and flushing, in patients with functional GEP tumours, and Exjade is the only once-daily, oral, iron chelator for the treatment of iron overload in patients receiving frequent blood transfusions to treat certain types of rare chronic blood disorders, including myelodyplastic syndromes, thalassaemia, sickle cell disease and other chronic anemias.
We also have a rich development pipeline of innovative products. Our leading compounds in development are Tasigna for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), RAD001 (everolimus) for various tumors and SOM230 (pasireotide) for Cushing’s disease.
