Commitment to Sustainable Access
Novartis Oncology remains a world leader in oncology by consistently discovering, developing, and making broadly available novel therapies that improve and extend the lives of people living with cancer. Novartis is deeply committed to helping patients gain long-term access to our life-extending therapies.
Providing access to cancer treatments is complex, demanding collaboration and compromise. Our experience shows the most sustainable and efficient access to our cancer therapies is achieved by working with the existing local healthcare systems.
We continually explore new and innovative ways to enhance access to our treatments, taking into account local, regional, and global needs.
Glivec Global Patient Access Programs
Recognizing from the beginning the critical importance of Glivec (imatinib) as a breakthrough cancer therapy, when approved in 2002, Novartis immediately mobilized efforts globally to ensure access to Glivec for patients in need who have been properly diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) or gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST). We also developed patient and healthcare professional education and personal support programs that are valuable in maximizing treatment success.
Today, the Glivec Global Patient Access Programs include a range of flexible models. Novartis develops national and local partnerships to implement these Glivec patient access programs. Our common goal is to provide the best cancer care possible for the greatest number of patients.
- Well over USD $1 billion worth of Glivec has been donated to patients and governments since the program's start in 2002.
- Since 2002, Glivec has been provided to more than 34,500 patients in 80 countries who otherwise would not have been able to afford treatment.
In 2002 we introduced GIPAP (Glivec International Patient Assistance Program), the original Glivec patient access model. Novartis Oncology donates the product to the patient-free of cost to the patient or the government. GIPAP helps patients who who are not covered by local or national reimbursement plans or insurance and have no other financial resources.
GIPAP is one of the most generous and far-reaching patient assistance programs ever developed on a global scale. Six years after its launch, GIPAP has touched tens of thousands of lives. The program continues to make a significant impact on patients, families, and communities every day.
Local governments, charities, or other payors, and Novartis Oncology share the cost of the medication. Novartis Oncology partners with these organizations to cover the cost of treatment for patients in need, with no payment by the patient.
Novartis Oncology and the patient share the cost of the medication on a sliding scale depending upon the patient's ability to pay. Patients contribute part of the cost of their treatment annually, with Novartis Oncology covering the balance.
Introducing Tasigna Global Patient Access Programs
Novartis Oncology expands our patient access programs to incorporate Tasigna® (nilotinib). Although Glivec has an unusually high rate of success, there are some patients who do not achieve an adequate response, stop responding, or are intolerant of the medicine.
Tasigna is a next-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor designed to meet the needs of the few adult patients with Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in the chronic or accelerated phases who either cannot tolerate, do not respond, or develop resistance to Glivec.
Tasigna has been introduced in nearly 50 countries worldwide, making our innovative therapies available to even more cancer patients in need of life-extending treatments.
In certain countries where Glivec patient access programs are available, we are providing access to Tasigna through the same patient access models as Glivec.
Tasigna International Patient Assistance Program (TIPAP) is being introduced in certain countries where full donation is the only appropriate path to access to Tasigna. In these countries full donation of Tasigna will be available to existing GIPAP patients who meet both clinical and economic criteria.
Novartis will also provide Tasigna through Shared Contribution and Co-pay Models in certain countries where these access models are available for Glivec. These approaches share accountability with other partners, thus allowing more patients to be reached and have access to Tasigna.
Beyond broadening the availability of Glivec and Tasigna to an expanded base of patients, our unique and innovative access programs-full donation, Shared Contribution, and Co-pay-are also designed to help people living with cancer resume normal, more healthy lives.
A critical way that our patient access programs meet these goals is by establishing partnerships with organizations that provide the critical support and disease management needed by patients, their families, and caregivers.
The success of our Glivec Patient Access Programs, and now the access programs for Tasigna, is due in large part to the seamless and complementary collaboration between Novartis Oncology and our main partners:
The Max Foundation, as the main partner for Novartis Oncology in the administration of GIPAP and TIPAP, is an invaluable collaborator and asset to our access programs' achievements.
In emerging markets where Novartis Oncology does not have local representation, we partner with Axios International to successfully implement the Glivec and evolving Tasigna patient access models. Axios specializes in global healthcare programs in emerging countries, with a focus on chronic disease management and drug delivery.
Novartis Oncology will continue to partner with China Charity Federation (CCF) on Glivec and Tasigna access efforts in China. CCF is an established, well-respected non-government organization with local offices covering all provinces in China.
It takes resourceful and committed partnerships such as these to make our comprehensive Glivec and Tasigna Global Patient Access Programs effective on the local level in many diverse countries-and to provide a necessary depth of service.
Novartis Oncology is responsible for identifying medical centers and physicians, and for donating and supplying Glivec and Tasigna to qualified treatment centers. We rely on our global and local partnerships to customize and maximize the success of the evolving Glivec and Tasigna Global Patient Access Programs.
As well, at Novartis Oncology we recognize the significant value of physicians, hospitals, and other organizations in making these partnerships possible in our pioneering patient access initiatives.
